“King”bird

Golden-crowned Kinglets overwintered this year in Erie County, Pennsylvania, but the numbers were far fewer than with the current influx of spring migrants, like these two recently seen at Leo’s Landing, Presque Isle State Park:

      Excellent observation! Forgot to mention in the post, this was two individuals foraging in shrubbery right along the trail out to the end of Leo’s Landing. At one point, the two got into a kerfuffle, with full raised crowns. (Too much vegetation in the way for pictures.) So, to answer the question, G-c Kinglets may raise their crowns rather prominently if there’s some sort of altercation, as here. (I.e., the pictures with the prominent crown were taken soon after the altercation.)
