In The Gloom

Rainy/gloomy weather the last few days in western Pennsylvania, including yesterday at Moraine State Park for a quick “birding rest stop” on the way down to Pittsburgh. Moraine State Park – located off Interstate 79 between Erie and Pittsburgh (closer to the later) – features Lake Arthur, a designated IBA (important bird area).

Point Picnic Area @ South Shore, Moraine State Park, w/ Lake Arthur

Not a ton of nature activity, but still some fun sightings:

Dark-eyed Junco
Canada Goose on ice
Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis)
Brown Creeper
Great Blue Heron in flight over ice
American Tree Sparrow
Rock Pigeons
Lake Arthur – winter view

Despite the recent gloom, it actually dawned clear this morning in Erie County. ‘Fingers crossed’ for some sun today. Here’s the astronomical happenings @ 7AM:

3/4 transitioning to 1/2 moon, morning of 8 January 2026
Pre-dawn – Jupiter and several of its moons
