At 8% of respondents, the #2 answer to question #1 of the 2025 BirdingPI.com Readers’ Survey (“What would you like to see more of?”) was, quite sensibly, “More ducks in flight.” Happy to oblige, from Presque Isle State Park in late December, featuring female Lesser Scaup + misc. ‘same day/location’ nature:

Female Lesser Scaup in flight
Female Lesser Scaup not in flight
Tundra Swans @ head of Presque Isle Bay
Male Bufflehead in flight (left) + Common Goldeneye (right)
Male and female Lesser Scaups @ landing mode
Lesser Scaup (f, top) + Bufflehead (m, bottom)
Tundra Swans II
Buffleheads on the beach @ Thompson Bay
Female Mallard in flight
“Fisher Drive owl” – Eastern Screech Owl
Tundra Swans III
Male Lesser Scaups in flight in light swow
Immature Tundra Swan (right)
MIF II

Finally, on Thompson Bay, something you don’t see every day, an American Beaver (Castor canadensis) breaking through the ice for a look-see and/or breath:

Soon thereafter, seen swimming in open water back towards its den:

98% did not suggest more birds in flight. The owl was smart: just sit and look pretty! Not much work involved!
How mice to see the beaver. Perhaps it can meet up with the mink and they can play card games.

As the crow flies, the beaver in Thompson Bay was relatively close to the mink at East Ave Boat Launch – just a short jaunt across the outer bay. Would require swimming in fairly open water, so unlikely they’ll get together any time soon.
